Where can I engage in free speech activity?

Updated: Mar 20, 2022

Free speech activity may take place in "public forums" such as streets, sidewalks, and parks.

Ensure that during your demonstration you do not impede on the rights of others.

Generally, all types of expression are constitutionally protected in traditional "public forums", such as streets, sidewalks, and parks. In addition, your speech activity may be permitted to take place at other public locations in which the government has opened up to similar speech activities, such as the plazas in front of government buildings.

Expressive activity is allowed in public forums as long as it does not interfere with the rights and activities of others- for example, demonstrators may not block pedestrians, business entrances, or traffic. The government may sometimes regulate how these activities take place, but not on the basis of their content or message.
