The pandemic has shown a dramatic uptick in Anti-Asian sentiment, which Asian Americans in New York City say has given them greater motivation to vote during the city's mayoral and county council elections. It has raised awareness for, and understanding of the role public policy plays in determining the racial policies of a city and its communities. Social justice organizations led and supportive of Asian Americans have stepped up to inform Asian American voters about the registration process, and explain the city's adoption of the ranked-choice voting system. This system has voters select their top five candidates, as opposed to choosing one. Candidates have also been motivated to reach out to these communities, and other racial and ethnic groups even if they fall outside their bases.
