Multiple people attacked a person in Northwest Washington on Friday after questioning the victim’s gender identity, and police are investigating the case as a possible hate crime, officials said. The victim suffered “significant” but non-life-threatening injuries in what police classified as an aggravated assault. About 2:25 a.m. Friday, a person bleeding from the face flagged down officers in the 3100 block of Georgia Avenue NW, according to a D.C. police incident report. The person “was nonverbal to officers.” Paramedics were called in, and the victim was taken to a hospital. No descriptions were given for the attackers, who had fled the scene.
Police are “investigating this offense as potentially being motivated by hate or bias,” officials said in statement, noting that such designations can change as more information is gathered.
