Many Black people will tell you that any cop who would make light of police brutality is also capable of committing police brutality. In February, The Root reported that LAPD officers were under investigation for passing around an insensitive and racist AF photo of George Floyd formatted like a Valentine’s Day card that read, “You take my breath away.” Last Friday, an officer being investigated behind the allegations was cleared of all wrongdoing after a panel of civilians determined that they only shared it to bring it to the attention of their superior. #BLM

any reasonable person could tell right away that he was mocking floyd. the excuse that he was just "bringing attention" to the post is utter bullshit
The idiom at the start of the paragraph is certainly true. They were both shocked and appauled that Chauvin was found guilty, not only because of his conviction for murder, perhaps more so his being convicted of committing police brutality. They're aware that the American public as a whole is more critical of police brutality as the result of that case, and since they don't have a reasonable counterargument or defense, they instead choose to mock the situation.
