Senate Republicans successfully blocked Democrats’ bill to narrow the gender wage gap Tuesday in the party’s second use of the filibuster to block majority-backed legislation.
I get what Republicans are sayin; what would one more law do when we already have three in the books, and employers shouldn’t have to face a slew of lawsuits because the Act may be too open-ended. However, we can see that those other three laws aren’t being enforced properl, as evidenced by how wage percentage for women was 82% of that for men. Even if it only reduced workplace gender discrimination somewhat, that’s still progress, and we’ll have to either keep passing stricter laws, or better enforce the laws we already have.
Also, we can see at least one major provision this Act had that the rest lacked, which was a training program for female workers to negotiate salaries. This could have potentially helped women establish fair salaries from the beginning, and reduced the likelihood of having to sue rather than increased it.
