Most colleges and universities have substance use policies that ban students from using medical marijuana on university property. Colleges often cite that they receive federal funding and that weed is banned federally.

The administration at William Paterson saw things differently. While medical marijuana has been legal in New Jersey since 2010, using cannabis for recreational or medical purposes on campus is a violation of the university’s code of conduct, according to Mary Beth Zeman, director of the school’s public relations.
