Local answer additions

Limited additions for California, District of Columbia, Maryland, New York, Virginia. These are not complete state libraries. Detailed guides are shown first. Background reading is available separately; choosing a state does not turn it into local law.

Our source policy

How we choose sources.

We start with laws, court decisions and official instructions. We also use government explanations, nonprofit guides and legal-aid directories. Our summaries are separate from those sources, and you can open the links to read them yourself.

Each encyclopedia answer links to its supporting agency, legal or nonprofit sources. Local additions link to the relevant state law. Coverage is incomplete and legal review is pending. A source link does not imply endorsement or a lawyer’s approval.

When was this checked?

Encyclopedia edition: 2026-10-13. Newly researched answers show their own source-check date. Older preparation cards retain their original status. A compilation date indicates when our draft was assembled. It does not mean that every source was audited, every law remains unchanged, or a lawyer approved the guidance. Legal reviewer and last legal review are currently unassigned.

What we are building next.

The detailed guides now show the setting, practical steps, exceptions, official routes and supporting source sections. A guide with a known end date is withdrawn from current guides after that date. Named legal review, source-change monitoring and a corrections history still need to be established.

Report a problem.

Describe the topic, sentence or source link you want us to inspect. You do not need to share an incident record, personal documents or identifying details. This opens an email draft; the website does not submit it automatically.
